  •   Rural Enterprise Development

Rural Enterprise Development (RED) initiative is one of the original programs of The Boston Pledge (TBP) to nurture and develop enterprising sprit in the under privileged regions around the world. The initial experiment focused on sub-urban Calcutta and rural Bengal was initiated in 2002 soon after the establishment of The Boston Pledge in 2001.

The first program during the first quarter of 2003 was conducted with the help of Center of Entrepreneurship Development of Boston University, Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) a Joint Venture between the Government of West Bengal and Bengal National Chambers of Commerce & Industry (BNCCI). Over a period of four and half days the TBP members interacted with over three hundred would be and/or micro entrepreneurs to discuss how they should develop sustainable business models to create independent, growing and profitable businesses, in the process begin a grass root movement toward a more vibrant society.

Since then through internet, phone calls, group sessions and personal visits the TBP members have helped a few of them to move forward in their respective fields. One of them is the founder of Vivekananda Sevakendra-O Sishu Uddyan Mr. Kapila Nandan Mondal. He is working with TBP's RED team to develop an all round schooling system with emphasis on character building, technical skills, globalization, and most importantly sports. TBP has taken the responsibility of helping he school with the development of the library and sporting facilities, in addition to the meeting & discussing with the local students and their parents on global trends and opportunities. It is an experiment to make local communities globally alert so that as they deepen their commitment to the development of the community they develop them selves as global personalities. The exhibits below provide a picture of the concept of a self sufficient village we wish to promote and glimpses of the activities in Lakhikantapur.
